Food and FAQs for Cornish Rexes

  • Feeding Your Cornish Rex

Feeding your Cornish Rex properly is essential to keeping them healthy and full of energy. This breed has a high metabolism and an active lifestyle, meaning they require a well-balanced diet rich in high-quality proteins and fats. The best food for Cornish Rex cats is a combination of high-quality wet and dry food to support their lean muscles and maintain their energy levels.

Cornish Rex kittens should be fed 3 to 4 times a day, especially between 4 and 8 months of age. Once they reach 1 year old, they can be fed twice a day, and adult cats typically do well with one to two meals per day.

  • Do Cornish Rex cats like human food?

Cornish Rex cats are incredibly curious and food-motivated, so don’t be surprised if they try to steal a bite from your plate! However, it’s important to ensure they don’t consume anything toxic, such as onions, chocolate, or dairy.

  • Do Cornish Rex cats enjoy catnip?

Yes! Cornish Rex cats often love catnip, which can make them extra playful and silly. While their reaction may seem amusing, catnip is completely safe for them in moderation.

  • Are Cornish Rex cats picky eaters?

Most Cornish Rex cats are not picky eaters—in fact, they tend to have big appetites due to their fast metabolism! However, some cats may prefer certain flavors or textures over others. If your Cornish Rex seems hesitant to eat, experimenting with different high-quality brands of wet or dry food can help find the right fit..

  • Do Cornish Rex cats drink a lot of water?

Cornish Rex cats need plenty of fresh water, so always keep a clean bowl available. While they don’t typically drink excessive amounts, their high activity level means they require consistent hydration. If your cat isn’t drinking enough, consider offering wet food, which provides additional moisture.

  • Can Cornish Rex cats drink milk?

Although some cats may enjoy the taste of milk, it isn’t good for them. The lactose in milk can cause digestive upset, leading to stomach discomfort or diarrhea. If you want to give your Cornish Rex a dairy-like treat, consider lactose-free cat milk as a safer option.

  • Should I feed my Cornish Rex a raw diet?

A high-protein diet is essential for a Cornish Rex, and some owners opt for a raw food diet. While raw feeding can provide natural nutrition, it’s a topic of debate among veterinarians. Some argue it mimics a cat’s natural diet, while others caution against bacteria and potential health risks. It’s best to consult your veterinarian before switching to raw feeding to ensure a balanced and safe diet.

  • Why do Cornish Rex cats cover their food?

Some Cornish Rex cats may instinctively try to "bury" or cover their food, mimicking their wild ancestors’ habit of hiding food from predators. This behavior isn’t harmful but is usually unnecessary in a domestic setting.

  • Do Cornish Rex cats play with their food?

Yes! Cornish Rex cats are known for being playful and mischievous, and some may swat at or chase their food before eating. This behavior can be entertaining but messy. If your Cornish Rex plays with their food excessively, try offering smaller portions at a time or using a puzzle feeder to engage them in a more structured way.

By providing a nutrient-rich diet, fresh water, and engaging feeding routines, you can help your Cornish Rex stay healthy, happy, and full of energy!
